HEALTH PROFESSIONS STUDENTS SERVICES

East Texas AHEC establish, maintain, and advocate community-based training for health professions students, with an emphasis on primary care and underserved populations.  Our efforts encourage the health professions student to return to the community setting to practice once they graduate.
 

Community-Based Education
From 2004 to 2005, we facilitated training in community settings for 923 health professions students for 142,545 hours of training, including:
  • 614 medical students
  • 72 residents
  • 162 physician assistant students
  • 23 nursing students
  • 47 allied health students
  • 5 other
We coordinated 624 community-based education (CBE) sites throughout East Texas, supported 1014 community faculty, coordinated experiences for students from 16 different disciplines and 21 campus partners.

Listed below is a sampling of health professions courses/programs which included community-based experiences/rotations in the East Texas AHEC service area. Medical Student Community Courses

The University of Texas Medical Branch - Galveston

  • Office of Regional Medical Education provides leadership among community and university-based regional medical educators to enhance the skills and resources needed to meet the School of Medicine’s mission of training competent, caring physicians. 

  • Practice of Medicine (POM1)  – integrated required course for 1st year medical students.  Course includes community rotations in physicians offices as well as multigenerational family home visits.  Students are also encouraged to volunteer at St. Vincent's House, a twice-weekly opportunity for students to work in a clinic situation utilizing clinical skills learned on campus.

  • Family Medicine Clerkship - required 1-month community rotation for 3rd-year students

  • Pediatric Clerkship  – required 1-month rotation for 3rd-year students where students complete 3 of the 4 weeks in a community setting.

  • Ambulatory Community Selective   – required 1-month community rotation for 4th-year medical students.  Students select the specialty of their choice.

Baylor College of Medicine

  • Patient, Physician and Society - required rotations throughout 1st year
  • Family Medicine Clerkship - required 1-month community rotation for 3rd-year students

The University of North Texas Health Science Center - Fort Worth

  • Rural Family Medicine Track - This is a defined curricular "pathway" that provides medical students with community-based experiences in rural medicine to prepare them for practice in a rural community. Track components occurring over four years include preceptorships, clinical clerkship rotations, community health service activities and a seminar on rural health topics.
