| Health Education Training Center Alliance
of Texas (HETCAT), Coastal Bend Region is a federally funded project.
It is a "sister" program of the AHEC with the HETCAT Coastal Bend
Regional office located with the East Texas AHEC but reporting to Dr.
Alfonso Holguin, Program Director and Principal Investigator for the
statewide program. The Coastal Bend Regional Office is directly
responsible for program development in 26 counties of the Texas Coastal
region south of Interstate 10. Projects are undertaken through
small grants and contracts to community entities after determining their
needs and priorities.

GERIATRIC EDUCATION CENTER |

The
Sealy Center on Aging received a
five-year $1.1 million grant funded by the Health Resources and Services
Administration (HRSA) to establish an
East
Texas Geriatric Education Center (ETGEC). The mission of
the ETGEC is: to provide enhanced interdisciplinary geriatric
education and training to health professionals and faculty and students
in allopathic medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy,
physician assistant studies, and social work.
Headquartered at UTMB, the emphasis will be
to build partnerships with the East Texas Area Health Education Centers
(AHEC) and affiliations within the region at Lamar University, Sam
Houston State University and Stephen F. Austin State University to bring
interdisciplinary geriatric education and training to health
professionals in the East Texas region.
The ETGEC will develop culturally sensitive
curriculum and continuing education efforts targeting issues of health
disparities with the long-term goal of increasing the delivery of
interdisciplinary health care services to older minorities, rural and
institutionalized elderly in medically underserved areas (MUAs) of East
Texas utilizing a variety of educational modalities, including didactic
presentations, advanced distance learning, teleconferencing and the
instillation of a large array of CD-ROM and web-based modules containing
interdisciplinary geriatric content.
