COMMUNITY HEALTH LITERACY |
|
Although our programmatic areas focus on developing the health workforce
We foster healthy
behavior development in individuals, groups, and communities. Described below is
a sampling of
680 community health projects developed by AHEC centers in 2004-2005.
These were presented to over 77,000 participants. |

In affiliation with the American Heart Association we have
offered a variety of courses that teach the skills and techniques
necessary for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the Heimlich maneuver
for choking, and how to handle various first aid
emergencies. Audiences ranged from children and laypersons
to healthcare workers.
We have promoted programs
such as the American Cancer Society's "Quit Line" to
healthcare and dental workers and employees at work sites and
healthcare facilities.
On the nationwide Great American Smoke Out
day, we have partnered with the Texas Department of Health,
American Cancer Society and East Texas Community Health to
visit elementary schools, shopping centers, and hospitals.
We have
provided breast cancer health
education training and breast health information.
We
have
distributed “HealthWise for Life” handbooks
to medically underserved and rural populations.
We have purchased
tooth models used to educate "Head Start" children about
proper brushing and dental hygiene.
We have sponsored monthly workshops for diabetics at no
charge.
Please contact your regional center
for more information regarding activities in your area. |
